Shoe boxes turned into cars, coffee tables made perfect stores and shops, and blankets made the best oceans and lakes. This was my childhood with my sisters. Nearly every day we turned our family room into what our mom called “Barbie Land”. Our Barbies set the scene to takes us anywhere we wanted to go, to be anyone we wanted to be.
Our imaginations came to life. Some days we were school teachers, others we were fashion designers. Many days we were moms taking care of our families. We had restaurants and farms and shopping malls. The Barbies and their accessories covered every inch of the room as we imagined and played for hours upon hours. Changing clothes, creating dialogues.
Barbie was our childhood. Barbie let us be anything we wanted to be and created memories that we still share and laugh about today.
Now as a mom, I watch my own girls with their Barbie dolls and love to see their imaginations go! Together they spend hours dressing them up just right and creating a “Barbie Land” all their own. Turning their dolls and themselves into teachers and doctors and scientists. They go to work and to school. They raise families and spend days at the park. They embark on wild adventures and travel the world. Through the power of open ended play, Barbie allows girls to pursue their limitless potential. You Can Be Anything!
Just the other day my sister shared Barbie’s new video ad: Imagine the Possibilities and we all laughed over the memories of our “Barbie Land”. The video shows exactly what Barbie is all about and why we loved them so much as kids.
Do you remember playing with Barbie as a child? Do you have any fun memories to share? I’d love to hear them!
