Whenever you’re taking a road trip, you have got to save your sanity. One of the ways we deal with the “I’m bored” and “are we there yet?” is by taking along a busy box. I know a lot of people that would just rather bring along a portable DVD player and that is awesome if that works or you…it doesn’t work for us. Instead we load up with little knick knacks to keep the kids entertained.
We started this by getting a little crafty. I bought each of them a shoe box sized plastic tub and let them decorate it. One thing I’ve found is when they help in the process they are more inclined to use it (or eat it if we are talking about cooking/food). They love to get involved and really take possession of things.
When they had finished I let them dry and loaded them up with goodies from the Dollar Tree. Another tip: if it is something they’ve never seen/used before, it will entertain them longer! I don’t like to spend a ton of money on things that will most likely get broken, lost, or thrown away in the car so we go to the dollar store. I spent less than $10 on items for each box.
The contents of the big kids’ boxes are:
-
coloring book
- crayon
- silly putty
- stickers
- brain teaser puzzles
- spiral art
- 100 piece puzzles
- dry erase board
***they also have pocket bags that hang on the seats in front of them and will be bringing lots of books to read and their electronics (WunderGirl has a kindle that she reads off of and WunderBoy has the Vtech Innotab 2S)
Wunderbaby’s box is similar but more age appropriate.
- Coloring Book
- Crayons
- Silly Putty
- Stickers
- Board book w/ finger puppet
- Shoe Board with shoelace
- magnetic shapes
- small board puzzles
**She still naps in the car so that will take up a good portion of the traveling.
