I have a confession; I am a glutton for YA Fantasy Novels. You see, I love a good read that will take you away to a time or a place full of Adventure. A book that can displace your mind from the mundane of our every day reality. When I delve into a new novel I want to be taken to a place where I don’t have to worry about what to make for dinner or how much laundry is piling up. With that said, I had the opportunity to review Dark Hope: Book One in the Archangel Prophesies, by Monica McGurk, and I jumped at the chance. Dark Hope is the first book in a new Trilogy, the Archangel Prophesies, and now that I’ve read the first I cannot wait to get my hands on the second! Dark Hope: Book One of the Archangel Prophesies was a win for me. It contains all the elements that I want; a forbidden romance, a strong independent girl coming into an understand of who she is and what she is capable of, and a battle of good vs. evil. The main character, Hope, embarks on an unlikely journey and along the way begins to discover what lies beneath the shelter that she has always known. Her unlikely partner, Michael, challenges her and begins to open her eyes to a new reality as they journey together. A reality where she plays an essential role in something that is so much bigger than herself. As the story evolves, new twists and unthinkable challenges are added, drawing you in and keeping you engaged from cover to cover. I was left wanting more of the story and am looking forward to seeing what unfolds in Book Two. My own Catholic upbringing and Faith certainly gave me a unique understanding while reading. From talk of Angels and Prophets to a reference of Manna, I was able to identify and understand where each of her biblical references had come from. It was interesting to see the authors perspective and twists added to many of the most mysterious occurrences in the Bible–giving creative back stories to some of the most well known. Along this journey they encounter a very REAL problem, one that we see too much of in our own world, Human Trafficking. The book brings awareness to what you may not even realize is happening right in your own town. They very scary reality that so many young girls have to face each day and are struggling to survive. A portion of the proceeds from each book is donated to organizations that fight human trafficking.
