Each year, my children’s school collects Box Tops as part of the Box Tops for Education fundraiser. It is a simple way for the school to raise thousands of dollars to use towards supplies and special programs and they make the collection a huge success by making a competition between classes.
We buy General Mills products throughout the year and cut out our Box Tops, but I have one problem; I never know where to store them! I probably lose half of the Box Tops that I save because they are tossed loosely into a drawer or placed in a plastic bag. Well, not anymore! Now I keep them right on the fridge in a magnetic box top holder.
The magnetic box top holder ensures that there is always a place to drop them in. Since its on the front of the refrigerator it is convenient and I don’t have to worry about losing them. When it’s time to turn in our Box Tops to the school I just empty them into a plastic bag and deliver them to my child’s classroom.
DIY Magnetic Box Top Holder
The magnetic box top holder is simple to make. I decided to dress mine up with the box top logo I found on a package of cheerios but that is definitely an extra step that you can skip if you do not have the supplies or are wanting this project to go a little faster (adding the logo to the front of the box takes about 15 extra min. since you need to let the mod podge dry).
SUPPLIES
- Plastic reusable food storage container
- 4 small magnets
- mod podge
- Box Tops and Box Top products
- Foam brush
- utility knife
- Hot Glue or Krazy Glue
To start this project, I first decorated my container with the Box Top logo found on the packaging of General Mills products. To do this you will need mod podge and a foam brush.
Paint a layer of mod podge onto one side of your container.
Take your cut out logos and place them on top of the mod podge. Hold them in place for a few seconds to make sure they stick.
Once that layer has dried adequately you will paint a second layer of mod podge over the top of the cut outs. Let this dry completely.
Once your labels have dried you can start the next step. With your utility knife, cut a small “X” in the center of the container lid.
Now you are ready to add your magnets. I used hot glue for this, but I would imagine a strong super glue would work as well. Place a small dot of hot glue onto one corner of the back side of the container.
Press your magnet to the glue until it has dried in place.
Repeat this step with the remaining magnets on each of the back corners of the container.
That’s it! Now you can easily add the Box Tops through the opening in the lid.
Keep your box top holder hanging on the front of your refrigerator for a convenient place to keep track of all of those Box Tops!
Want some bonus Box Tops? Look for participating products from General Mills at Walmart! I’ve grabbed tons of easy snacks and breakfast products that are perfect for back to school.
Now is a great time to start collecting those box tops. Many General Mills products have bonus box tops making it easy to fill up that magnetic box top holder!
Does your school collect box tops? Do you have a special way of collecting them? I’d love to hear other ideas!
