Encourage Children to explore the outdoors and learn about the environment with a Nature Walk. Print out our FREE printable Nature Walk Field Journal and take it along with you
A great, simple way to celebrate Earth Day is with a Nature Walk. Get the kids outdoors and looking at their surroundings. Find a trail, a lake, even just around your neighborhood. If you live in a very Urban area take them to the park. It doesn’t have to be elaborate it’s just about getting them outside and appreciating the world around them.
Look for different animals, birds and butterflies, and flowers that you may not have noticed before. It’s a great learning experience to discuss the different colors, sounds and describe the animals and other life that you may find along the way. The older kids always like to bring along a notepad to record their findings so I put together a Nature Walk Field Journal.
Free Printable Nature Walk Field Journal
This blank printable field journal allows the kids to bring it along with them and draw a picture of what they find along the way and record any observations they may have – color, climate, habitat, foods, etc.
On our nature walks over the years we’ve found new flowers and trees, birds, insects, small animals – so much to see and record!
For older kids its a great idea to take the worksheet home and based on the descriptions, do some research to find out which species they have found. There are endless possibilities with this activity but the idea is to get them outside and learning about their natural surroundings.
While you are out exploring, take along a small trash bag with you. The kids are never to young to learn to help out. We’ve done this on several occasions and you would really be surprised at how quickly you can fill up a trash bag! Earth Day is the perfect time to teach the children to love nature and be responsible about keeping out planet beautiful.
