When I was in the 4th grade the school I was attending celebrate their 50th anniversary. Part of that celebration involved the opening of a 50 year old time capsule that the very first students had left their for us and we in turn stuffed it full of goodies and placed it back in the brick wall to sit for another 50 years. Since that day I have love time capsules and couldn’t wait to recreate that kind of excitement with my children. What better time than to make a family time capsule on New Years Eve!
This family time capsule is both a fun craft for the kids and a wonderful keepsake to open up next year!
Family Time Capsule
Materials Needed to create your family time capsule:
- Empty Coffee Can (or other container)
How to create your family time capsule:
First you will want to thoroughly wash and dry the inside of your container and remove any labels. Let the kids decorate the container with glitter, stickers, markers or other embellishments. Allow this to dry. Easy, right?
Next to fill your time capsule:
Really you can place anything you would like inside. We are opting to have each child write a short letter, maybe of their wishes and goals for the new year and draw a self portrait of themselves.
Other ideas to place inside are letters to your children, height and weight stats, favorite colors, foods, books of each of them. They may also want to write letters to each other or simply write their favorite memory from that year and place it inside. Whatever you choose to do it will surely be a treat to open them up and read the following year on New Years Eve!
Seal up your time capsule (don’t look at what is inside!) and place it away to open up next year. I cannot wait for ours to be opened!
