Do you know what I LOVE about kids science? You can do experiments with just about ANY materials, and fall pumpkins are NO exception.
Using natural materials from Autumn is fun for an experiment and there are just so may ideas to use up those pumpkins!
STEM (or STEAM) is the fun acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math – the perfect way to focus your efforts on teaching science to kids. So many aspects of STEAM roll right into each other, sharing a math lesson within art or combining engineering with technology – the possibilities are endless!
So – back to our Pumpkin STEAM! So many to choose from but I think I found some of the most incredible Pumpkin STEAM Activities out there! From slime, to marble runs, even a cool optical illusion!
Pumpkin STEAM Activities
Use engineering skills to create a functional paper plate pumpkin patch marble run – or, if you have lots of LEGO on hand you can build a LEGO pumpkin patch marble run – either way, hours of fun! Try these Fall LEGO Challenge cards to build a pumpkin too!
This Pumpkin STEM Challenge using candy pumpkins might find you telling your kids not to eat the materials! YUM! Another yummy experiment is this Magic Pumpkin Science – just don’t eat your materials before your experiment is complete!
Use your art skills and creativity with a pumpkin optical illusion – what will your pumpkin reveal?
I love a lesson that goes with a good book – like this 5 little Pumpkins STEM Challenge – finding a way to build a fence that will hold all five pumpkins! Or use your geometry knowledge of 3D shapes to build a square pumpkin model to go with the book Spookly the Square Pumpkin.
Learn the parts of a pumpkin with a song and complete a hands-on pumpkin investigation – this is a great lesson for the little ones. And once you’ve done a full investigation, you can learn the pumpkin life cycle!
Use your pumpkin to study mathematical concepts with hands on weight, measurement, and geometry activities – We love these Halloween Tangrams, and DIY scale to measure the weight of a pumpkin.
You can even build a clock using a pumpkin!! (This one does require you prep ahead of time because you will need a potato clock kit purchased to do complete the clock.)
And of course, you can’t talk STEAM Activities without a little bit of chemistry!
Explore crystal science with pumpkin crystals or use your pumpkin for a volcano experiment. And after you’ve carved that pumpkin, turn the pumpkin guts into slime!
