Internet safety tips every parent must follow to keep their kids safe online
This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Kaspersky Lab. All opinions are 100% mine.
In this cyber age that we live in it’s no wonder that internet safety tops the list of parents’ worries. Making sure the whole family stays safe online is of utmost importance to everyone.
We are definitely an internet family, as most families these days are. My business requires me to be online. Everything I do from banking, to signing contracts, to creating products all happens 100% online.
My husband is working on his MBA through a Master’s Program at U of A – several thousand miles away from our home – he works completely online through portals and web conferencing.
My children have online textbooks, they complete research projects for school that requires the use of the internet, they even have their own “school” based social media type platform!
With the internet literally at the tips of our fingers with laptops, netbooks, tablets and smart phones, internet safety is a unique challenge that parents today face that no other generation has faced before.
As an adult I know how to safely navigate the web, but my children haven’t learned that skill yet. As a parent, I want them to be able to utilize all that the internet has to offer while protecting them and teaching them along the way.
While I conduct my business, I want to be able to do so without fear of virus attacks or someone hacking into my email accounts. For this reason, we take internet safety very serious in our home.
Internet safety facts
The fact of the matter is – more and more children are using the internet from an earlier age and as often as every day. We no longer need to just worry about our own internet use, but also our children’s.
A recent survey showed that one out of eight parents allowed their children the use of the internet starting at age two. By the time they are teen agers, 32% of children are hiding their browsing history from their parents!
Add in chances for online bullying, identity theft or predators – it’s no wonder parents want to make sure their kids are safe online!
But how do you ensure cyber safety with your family?
I not only want to make sure that my children are not at risk while searching online but also that my own business is safe!
For starters, you can teach your children to be safe on the internet. If you are allowing them access to internet then make sure you are discussing web safety with them.
Have open discussions about the dangers of the internet with your children and teenagers and make sure you talk to them often.
Internet Safety Tips
Talk to your children about internet safety.
As mentioned above, talking to your children about internet safety is the first step every parent should be taking when it comes to keeping their family safe online.
Don’t give young children access to the internet.
Making sure a child is aware of the dangers of the internet and is old enough to understand that, is imperative for keeping them safe online.
Keep computers and other devices in a common area.
By keeping computers and internet access in common areas of the home, such as a living or family room (i.e. not in a child’s bedroom) you are making sure that your child is being supervised while online. A teenager is also less likely to search for things they don’t want his/her parent to see if it is in a common area of the home.
Equip your home with Safety Software.
This one is so important! You just never know what could be lurking around on your computer. Every time you download something from the internet there is a chance that you are adding malicious software. Every time you enter your password to your banking account – are you positive it is safe? Every time you log into social media have you made sure no one can hack into it?
Kaspersky Total Security is the THE WORLD’S MOST AWARDED PROTECTION when it comes to safe guarding your computers and is the brand that I trust to use with my own family.
I love how Kaspersky Total Security is easy to use and the only software that I need to protect my entire online identity and my family’s privacy.
I can enable a secure connection, manage all of my passwords and even disable my webcam.
Scanning my computer is is easy with a click of a button.
And with Kaspersky Total Security I can safeguard my children on line and monitor the activity of different users.
Kaspersky Lab has something for all of your internet safety needs. For the home and family I prefer Kaspersky Total Security and for your business there is the Kaspersky Small Office Security option. They also have a Kaspersky Security Cloud to ensure all your devices are safe.
