We joined a playgroup when my oldest daughter was 15 months old. I can remember all the other moms laughing as I cringed. I had my sweet little girl dressed to ‘perfection’, in her designer sweat suit and white tennis shoes. As a first time mom, I was clueless. Until this point she had been my little buddy. Our daytime activities included starbucks and mall shopping. But on this day she was getting her first taste of what it meant to be a kid – and she took full advantage of it.
Within minutes, my perfectly dressed little princess was covered in dirt. She was running and climbing and digging – loving every minute of it. That’s when I knew my days of dressing up my baby girl were over and I needed to step into reality.
Two years and a toddler boy later and I was fully immersed in that reality. They are kids and what do kids like to do? Play outside and get dirty! Now I don’t cringe at the site of dirt, I actually laugh. And break out the camera to capture pictures of my kids in the middle of pure happiness, just kids being kids!
