Home sweet home.
We are finally here, and finally settled, so I wanted to share our Living Room Makeover with you!
If you don’t already know, my family traveled for two weeks across country this summer – two parents, four kids, and a dog. My husband towed the travel trailer and I drove my SUV, stopping along with way to visit family and have some fun. The point of this trip? To move our family from one coast to the other. We left San Diego, Ca for our new home in Coastal Carolina!
Living Room Makeover
When my husband and I got married we were literally “living on love”. We scrounged up enough furniture to make a home live-able. Much of what we owned was second hand, and anything new was very very inexpensive. Over the years we added children, moved several times, added more children and kept the same furniture that we started out with.
Well, with this move came my opportunity to buy brand new living room furniture, and completely re-do and redecorate the space exactly how I wanted.
Industrial Farmhouse
I am old fashioned and simple. My husband, being military, is a bit rugged. Our children are super active and we love the outdoors so I wanted my home to reflect that. The style that I have chosen to go with is Industrial Farmhouse.
It is a wonderful combination of clean lines, simple whites and grays, with wood and metal accents. I love the textures and the warm feeling added by them. A home to me is all of these things; a place full of love and laughter and memories being made. Our living room makeover reflects pieces of all of that.
I reused what I could, spent wisely, and created a living room with both style and function that the whole family can enjoy.
Flooring
One thing I would love to change is the flooring in this room.
When designing and decorating space, the flooring is so very important – not only for design, but for functionality. Did I mention we have four kids and a dog?!
We’ve lived in homes with every type of flooring imaginable – white carpet, brown carpet, new carpet, old carpet, hard wood, laminate, tile. So many choices but after trying them all, I’ve learned a few things. A lot of things to consider when adding flooring to a home with children.
As you can see in the photos, nice flooring would really bring the entire room together. The current carpet just gets washed out and won’t withstand the high traffic from kids.
Any time I’m choosing flooring I have to take in a few considerations. Not only focusing on the overall look of the space but also how will the space be used? Who will be using the space?
Carpet is great for the kids because it is soft, if you have a crawler it’s almost a necessity.
Tile is a wonderful option for Kitchens/Bathrooms BUT cleaning the grout is a pain!
Laminate is super easy to clean but doesn’t hold up very well – it can stain, rip, and bubble up (we’ve had all three happen).
Hard Wood is gorgeous but it shows dust (and dog hair) like you can’t imagine.
For this space I would absolutely do a dark hard wood with some character to it.
A Resilient Vinyl with a hardwood look can also be a great option with the kids. Especially if you plan on using it in a family room or play room.
I would love the hard wood throughout the bottom floor. Hard wood is a great, timeless surface perfect for an Industrial Farmhouse style home.
In the bedrooms though I would go with something a little softer for the kids. A great carpet that can withstand the tests of children is perfect. I like multi-tonal (you know to hide the accidental spills), something child and pet friendly.
What is your perfect flooring? Would you choose a hardwood for this space or something else?
