We love to gear up for all of our sporting events with some awesome fan gear. I don’t know, maybe it’s the cheerleader in me, but when I’m watching my team play I have got to show some spirit! And being the DIYer that I am, I love to making my own custom iron on – you can design them to match any team’s colors and add your favorite player’s jersey number!
Making a custom iron on for a t-shirt is so easy and affordable. This project is completely NO SEW and will only take you about 15 min. to complete!
To make these custom iron on T-shirts I first went to my go-to website for active wear for the whole family: GildanOnline.com
Gildan is the maker of quality activewear, t-shirts, underwear and socks for the whole family – you likely already have some in your closet! You can order blank quality cotton activewear from their online store which is absolutely perfect for this project. Gildan activewear is comfortable, durable, and affordable!
Make Your Own Custom Iron On
Now that you’ve ordered your quality cotton activewear from Gildan, we can start dressing it up for those games!
What you will need:
- Gildan Tshirt
- Spray On Fusible Adhesive
- Fabric of your Choice (you don’t need much, I made enough for three shirts from just 1/4 yard)
- Rotary Cutter/Mat – or scissors
- Puffy Fabric Paint
- Computer/Printer
- Iron
To begin this project, you will first wan to choose your iron on design. Since we are making T-shirts for sporting events I chose a collegiate style font with the number 9. Enlarge your font in word, or a similar program, to the desired size and print.
Using your rotary cutter or scissors, cut out your number to create a template.
Once you have your template prepared, lay it on top of your fabric. Again, using your rotary cutter and mat, cut around the template onto the fabric to create your applique.
Now that your applique has been cut out you can use your spray adhesive to fuse it to your Tshirt. To do this you will want to turn your applique over so that you will spray the adhesive onto the back side. Make sure you lay it down on a cloth or a piece of paper, as there will be over-spray from the adhesive.
Spray an even layer of adhesive onto your fabric and allow it to dry – this will only take a minute or two. Place your applique into desired location on your Gilden T-shirt. Iron on your applique, using small circles to press, for several minutes. Let cool.
To finish off the shirt your will want to outline your applique with puffy paint. Carefully apply even pressure and follow along the edges of the fabric.
This will cover up the raw edges of the fabric and finish off the look of your custom iron on.
Allow the paint to dry a full 24 hrs before wearing.
See? Totally easy and super fun to have your own custom design!
