Secrets to Creating Holiday Magic for Your Children
The Holidays are fast approaching and I could just squeal with excitement! There is just something about this time of year that makes my heart happy and I love sharing the joy that I feel with my friends, family and community. Maybe its the colder weather forcing many to stay indoors and keep warm. Maybe it’s all the extra time off of work and school, allowing us to spend more time together. Or maybe it’s just the Christmas Spirit. Whatever it is, I want to share with you my secrets to creating holiday magic for your children. Those magical memories are something thy will cherish for a lifetime and likely carry on with their own children some day.
5 Simple Ways to Create Holiday Magic
Focus on Family, not Gifts
I put this first because this secret is what it all boils down too. If you are stressed and running around shopping the entire month of December you are likely not experiencing the magic that the season has to offer. Give your children the gift of your time, instead. Make a point to share a moment with them each day. You could watch a movie together, or read a Christmas story. Take them around to look a Christmas lights. When they are grown, it is these moments that they will remember, not the gifts that were wrapped under the tree.
Decorate
Each year we spend several days decorating our home, inside and out. It is a lot of work, but so worth it. Trees, Garland, and lights instantly change the attitude in our home making it warm and cozy. Watching the children pull out each decoration and telling stories about them is the most wonderful experience.
Start a Tradition
We have family Christmas traditions that go back several generations. Small things from the fact that there is always a large orange at the bottom of the stockings to larger traditions like the celebration of St. Nicholas Day. Traditions are so important for uniting the family and they give the children something to enjoy and memories to hold onto as they grow older.
Music
I’m going to quote the movie Elf now: “The best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear”. From the day after Thanksgiving though Christmas there is nothing but holiday music in our home and car. Play a favorite Christmas album, sing children’s Christmas songs, carol for you neighbors. However you wan to, Christmas Music adds instant magic.
Become a kid again
Experience the joy and magic of Christmas through your children’s eyes, remembering what it was like for you as a child. Let the stress of being an adult melt away and share the season with your kids. Play in the snow, bake cookies, sing loud, visit Santa….just enjoy the season! As you let go, and enjoy yourself, your children will feel the magic of Christmas.
