Must try, Six Cheese Italian Meatball Recipe for the best cheesy meatball sandwiches!
When it comes to feeding my family, meal planning is a must. I plan out each dinner and always prefer to use whole ingredients when I can, but cooking for a family of six needs to be convenient and easy too!
I make meatballs, a lot. The kids love Italian meatballs on top of their spaghetti or as a sandwich so they have become somewhat of a staple in our house.
Last week, I was putting together one of my go-to dinners and decided to try something new.
Usually I make a basic meatball and top it was sauce and lots of cheese but as I checked out my freezer I decided to combine one of my favorite recipes for spaghetti and meat sauce with our typical meatball sandwich and the outcome was AMAZING!
When I make spaghetti with meat sauce for dinner I like to use Italian sausage mixed in with the ground beef to give tons of flavor. This time I decided to try this mixtures with my meatballs and then I took it a step further – instead of adding cheese to the top of the sandwich only I added it right into the meatball mixture!
The result of my creative combination was the BEST, Six Cheese Italian Meatball Recipe you will ever have! They were perfect to top with a traditional red sauce and MORE cheese for a meatball sandwich that the entire family loved.
For the best results, I made sure to use quality ingredients that were also convenient – like Sargento Shreds.

Six Cheese Italian Meatballs
I chose to turn these meatballs into meatball sandwiches but they would also be terrific on top of a pile of spaghetti!
You could definitely make up a large batch of meatballs and freeze them to use at a later time, too – I’m all about planning ahead and saving time!
Meatball Ingredients:
- 1 lb. lean ground beef
- 1 lb. mild italian sausage, ground
- 1 cup fresh bread crumbs
- 1 cup Sargento Shreds 6 Cheese Italian mix
- 2 eggs
Directions:
To make the fresh bread crumbs you will need several slices of bread, or one sub roll. I used a sub roll since that is what I was purchasing to use with the meatball sandwiches. Using a fine grater, rub your bread across it until you have enough fresh bread crumbs for 1 cup.
Preheat oven to 400*
Mix together beef, sausage, bread crumbs, and cheese and eggs. Stir until fully combined.
Line a baking sheet with foil and lightly spray with oil
Shape your meat mixture into 1″ balls and place on your lined baking sheet
Cook approximately 20 minutes or until meat is cooked through.
Meatball Sandwich Ingredients:
- Cooked meatballs
- 4″ Sub Sandwich Rolls
- Sargento Shreds Mozzarella Cheese
- 1 Jar of quality traditional red pasta sauce
Meatball Sandwich Directions:
Place meatballs into large pan and add jar of sauce. Heat until simmering.
Slice open each roll and place 3-5 6 cheese Italian meatballs on top of one half (quantity depends on how large your meatballs are and the size of your rolls)
Top with Sargento Shreds Mozzarella Cheese
Enjoy!
