Many of you may remember that Wundergirl recently found herself needing a pair of glasses. She had been complaining of headaches and told her teacher that the ‘words were jumping around on the page’ while she was reading. As I myself started wearing glasses in the 4th grade, I definitely wanted to have her eyes checked out. My vision isn’t too bad, but it was discovered that I am farsighted and therefore need glasses for reading or computer work. I was thinking my daughter may have the same problem, little did I know what her eye exam would reveal!
We went into the eye doctor that afternoon ‘just in case’, and walked out with a prescription that she would need to wear at all times! We discovered that she has Astigmatism so going without glasses just wasn’t an option. Luckily, we had vision insurance, or so I thought. Turns out, the vision insurance that we have through my husbands work (aka the Military), covers the cost of one eye exam per year. That’s it! There was no allowance or help to cover the cost of frames or lenses. And WOW do you have any idea how much those things cost? And here they are telling me that she HAS to have them ASAP. I had a little bit of sticker shock and was wishing we had some better insurance.
One of her biggest concerns was how they would look, and do you blame her?! Even at the age of 7 a girl needs to look her best in all of her accessories! Luckily, glasses have come a long way from the first pair I got 20 yrs ago. We got her what she needed and was able to find a cute pair at an okay price (which I then had to put on a credit card, thanks to no insurance coverage) but left the eye doctor a little sick. She is a very active child, who participates in sports and I know she will soon be needing a lighter pair to wear during activities. I also realized that even though I haven’t updated my prescription and gotten a new pair of glasses in over 10 years (wow are they outdated!), there was no way I’d be getting new ones anytime soon with our current insurance plan.
I was so excited when I found out I’d be working with VSP Direct.
