Looking for Leprechaun Trap ideas? Turn it into a Leprechaun Trap STEM Challenge!
Every year my children love to try and catch a Leprechaun. They have come up with all sorts of Leprechaun trap ideas.
For the last 6 years or so, they have been faithfully creating Leprechaun Traps to see if they might have a bit of luck.
What I didn’t realize when we first started this tradition is that building a Leprechaun Trap is a fantastic STEM challenge!
What began as pre-fabricated crafts for them to do in preparation for St. Patrick’s Day has evolved into a giant crafting and learning experience that we look forward to every year!
Leprechaun Trap Ideas: Make it a STEM Challenge
This activity is hands on for the kids and hands off for the adults! I love to see their imaginations at work as they complete the task of building the best Leprechaun Trap ever. To start them off, I collect various supplies, then I let them go for it. Bonus: it’s a team building exercise as well since they only make ONE trap and the three of them have to work together to design the Leprechaun Trap, and then build it using collaborative ideas.
The Challenge: Build a Leprechaun Trap.
The Supplies: Recycleable materials such as cardboard tubes and boxes, plastic containers, lids, string, ribbon, pipe cleaners, tape and glue. Art supplies such as markers or paint. And of course – GOLD! Gold glitter, gold pieces, gold gemstones – anything you have lying around.
The Parameters: Must work together to build only ONE leprechaun trap using the materials provided. Encourage the children to sketch out a draft of their design and then make adjustments to it. You can add extra challenges like making the tallest tower or a bridge to cross.
Of course, we never actually catch a Leprechaun but they always do leave behind a little gold or a mysterious treat for their efforts.
